The Giant Clam, family Tridacnidae, has long been a staple food source to the indigenous people of the South Pacific. Recently the Tridacnid family, consisting of nine species, has suffered from over fishing and several of which are now recognized as endangered.

Biscayne Group biologists worked closely with researchers in the Solomon Islands, Palau, the Philippines, and the Marshall Islands to develop new methods for larval culture and production of the animals. Our biologists established the first ever pilot scale Giant Clam hatchery in the continental United States where research continued and new aquaculture techniques developed. The project focused efforts on color enhancement through the manipulation of photo-periods and light intensities to produce brilliantly colored clams which are more desirable to the aquarium industry.

Today, these Pacific Islanders are utilizing these new aquaculture techniques to farm raise seven of the nine species for both food and aquarium trade exports.
